MAT – Muscle Activation Technique

Are you injured? Most of us are, in some way…often times this is a small daily or “once in a while” pain that we’ve experienced for so long that we don’t often think about it except when we’re hurting. You probably blame the part that is sore, right? It makes sense, but its not always true! Sometimes, when we think we’ve got an injury in one place, its really a result of other muscle or support systems in our bodies failing and placing that stress onto another group. Do you have back pain? It might have nothing to do with your back!

Muscle Activation Technique is basically the process of re-activating muscles or tendons that have fallen out of use and been de-activated by your body, fused to a bone, or any other number of injuries. At an average cost of $50 per re-activation, this therapy may be a little painful during the process of bending and stressing and otherwise manipulating the muscles and tendons which are injured, but would you suffer through short bursts of pain to fix your daily pain forever? I sure would!

The basic idea behind the technique is to find the muscles or systems that have been deactivated, shorten the tissue, apply pressure, then lengthen the tissue. If muscles are adhered to each other, or to a bone, this can feel a LOT like a muscle tear.

The rehabilitation can be done by licensed practitioners of the therapy, which can decrease pain as well as dramatically increase flexibility, strength, and performance. I got a lot of this information from Tim Feriss’ amazing new book “The Four Hour Body” which I’d recommend to anyone, not just athletes. You can learn how to hit home runs effectively, lose weight, supplement your diet for performance, hold your breath for 5 minutes or more, and all kinds of other amazing things!
